For our 14th Yule Calendar surprise, we have something soothing after yesterday's earworms: a gentle song about Yule trees.
I wrote this song last year for our kinship band, the Brandy Badgers. I do not remember much of what inspired me to write this. At the time, it felt a bit sentimental, and I have been a bit shy to sing it in the game. Still, I wanted to dust it off for this Yule Calendar. It is asong about hope and light in the darkest of times.
Yule Tree of Light
It’s getting dark
The cool night air takes my breath away
Here we stand hand in hand
In the cold winternight
To hail our evergreen Yule tree
Shining so bright a light
It warms up our hobbit hearts
Like trees in ancient tales
Our tree brings us cheer
It’s made of dreams and hope
The herald of better days
Sparkling like stars newborn
Its candles are alight
Dear Yule Tree, with all yer might,
let your magic light up the dark night!
Dear Yule Tree, with all yer might,
let your magic warm up the cold night!
Dear Yule Tree, with all yer might,
let your magic light up the dark night!
Dear Yule Tree, with all yer might,
let your magic warm up the cold night!
I feel no fear
I know good times await ahead
For us all, both big and small
The tide will soon turn
And dark times will be gone
Thanks to our Yule Tree of Light
We stand strong like these trees
Like a forest of old
We might bend, but we’ll never fall
Never fall
We just gently sway in the wind
Feeling alive and free
This song is best sung to the melody of this song that is not a Yule song at all: Now We Are Free by Hans Zimmer & Lisa Gerrard, from the Gladiator film soundtrack.
