December 24, 2021

Here it is: 24th of December, the yule eve! It's time to reveal our last hobbity yule surprise: the traditional yule video made by Lina with the help of some LOTRO hobbits on the Laurelin server. Scroll down to watch the video and read what miss Lina wishes to tell us about it!

First though, I'd like to give my most hearfelt thanks to each and everyone who has helped make this year's hobbity yule calendar. I have never received so many entries from so many people, it has been absolutely amazing. You have all cheered up people everywhere, myself included. I have had some troubles in my life lately, but organizing this calendar has helped me get into that yule cheer too and raised my spirits when I have been feeling down. So I thank you all!

Now, here's the Laurelin hobbit video for 2021 and what miss Lina writes about the background! Yer can also read her full video post here at her burrow.

Oinkers v. Noinkers: The 2021 Laurelin hobbit Yule video

Oinkers v. Noinkers

It all started with Shaun the Sheep.

I love stop-motion animation, especially the Wallace and Gromit films from Aardman. They are also behind the Shaun the Sheep shorts, covering the adventures of Shaun and his friends at the Mossy Bottom farm. And who are Shaun’s worst enemies there? Three vile and smelly pigs, who love little more than throwing slop after the other animals.

So I figured, why not use this as a basis for this year’s Yule video? Oinkers are also a common theme within the Shire hobbit community on Laurelin. Some feel that the silly swines are only good for sausages, others keep pig pens in their gardens, while some even invite the prickly porkers inside their burrows. Thus, we had lots of in-game tie-ins to a hog-heavy video already.

Still, the hobbit Yule movies are for the most part music videos, telling tales with a minimum of text/voice. How could we pull off something along the above lines within this format?

Two things helped. First, I recalled the “Swine Lake” performance from The Muppet Show, which is about as bonkers a ballet you could think of. Second, Spielberg’s remake of “West Side Story” was released in cinemas this December. So I tossed all these inputs into the blender, invited the other hobbits along and started shooting with a loose story idea in mind: A slow classical ballet start, until the pigs arrive and take over, with lots of freestyle sloppy sliding around in a pen. After that, the choreography gets tighter as the West Side Story inspirations take over. And at the very end, we get a small cameo from a recurring figure in the Shire Yule season…

The ensuing musical ballet is the result of 2,5 hours run-and-gun-filming, trying lots of scenes to see which would work, then tying them all together into the above story afterwards. I think it turned out pretty well! Our biggest challenge throughout was the absolutely atrocious state of LOTRO’s servers these days, with disconnects and not least recurring hitching and latency. You’ll see some instances of the latter throughout, although I weeded out the worst. Sadly, I didn’t catch the scene when everyone accidentally walked over a ledge and fell down to the riverside below. That had surely made it into a blooper reel…

The Yule videos typically have two main segments, where the second is based on a shorter filming session (not least because they are done on a weekday, and many hobbits need early naps). This time, we spent an hour and a half in Winterhome, looking to bring hobbit cheer to the locals there. I think we did, unless you were in the same layer as us when we shot the movie. 30+ hobbits emoting like crazy brings a lot of chat spam to the world. Then again, it was all done to bring good Yule spirits to everyone. So apologies in retrospect, but I’d likely do the same again if need be!

In the second segment, you also get lots of screenshots sent in by Laurelin hobbits. I am still amazed that so many spend their time helping make these videos, it really wouldn’t be possible without yer all.

Thank you again, and a happy Yule to everyone!

I can't believe that we are already here, looking at our 23rd yule calendar surprise. Tomorrow we'll reveal the last one. Today though, I have something special for you all. I wanted to sing one of my favourite Brandy Badgers yule songs – In the Starlit Night, a song written by miss Lina. It is based on the song When a Child is Born. Here, I sing the song and strum along with my guitar. I am as amateur as you can get, but I hope this recording is at least tolerable. It's not that I am aiming to take part in the Shire's Got Talent or anything...

For me, this song about friends and yule pretty much emphasizes what I feel now on yuletide. I wanted to express gratitude for all my friends, both real life and in-game ones. Thank you for being there for me. Cheers!

The yule days are here soon! For our 22nd yule calendar entry, Master Wiberic sent us some hobbity yule (romance) Shenanigans. This story stars Wiberic, Filomina, Matzo, some Grand Order / Hobbitry-in-Arms / People of the Shire hobbits.

Yer can view the story (there are many pictures) here!

Also, here are some pictures of yule badgers. Because, why not? These are sent by master Piper!

Today, it's the time to reveal the yule creatures slideshow! Earlier, we asked yer folks to send yule creature pictures for this hobbity yule calendar. Here is a video made of those pictures. There might be a few creatures familiar from Tolkien's works and LOTRO too.

 Yule creatures by LOTRO players

Also, some folks sent us pictures along with comments and stories. I couldn't incorporate them into the video itself, but I'd like to reveal those stories here with the pictures. Yer might spot some of these pictures in the video as well.

Here are the pictures sent by Adamantja and her Clearwater family. She attached some descriptions to the pictures, a short story.

We have for you a short holiday animal story...

The town was all lit up, ready for snow and evening festivities.

Every house was lit by candles and holiday cheer.

The animals of the town had gathered at the farm. Even the hamsterééééén was there!

(It's a joke - there's a Dutch verb, to hoard or gather, "hamsteren", and it's so close to hamster that even sign language uses a hamster action for the verb. One of the national grocery chains, Albert Heijn, uses that long word, hamsterééééén, in their ads when there's big sales, and they have a hamster character for it. I have a few hamsteréééééns around the house. :D)

Even the Catan-amals joined in, ready for a grand night time story.

Also, Yamy sent us some pictures with descriptions. Here's the ones they sent!

Living at a tropical place, the animals here wish to stay all year round. While some come here to spend a warmer winter season, is the plants that change colors during this time. Some species get more abundant & have become a symbol of Yule:

Gandules Verdes (Green Pigueon Beans) a seasonal round variety that grow in trees

Pascuas Floridas (Poinsettias) they turn bright red only during winter

Let's not forget the exotic Christmas Tree!

These pictures have been delivered to you by this yule rhino who was too slow and didn't get into the video itself.

The rhino pictures have been taken by miss Oleanderrose!

For our 20th yule calendar surprise, we will reveal a bunch of yule greetings we have received! Here are a few from various LOTRO folks.

First, two pictures by Yamy. One of her folks has been travelling to faraway lands for a yule vacation. Here's what she tells about the scenes:

Vanimere decided to take a bit of wintry Yule vacations. She heard that a place run by dwarfs that is called Ibdêkh-buzru (Central Welkin-lofts) at Gundabad, is what is inn this time of the year. The brochure reads: “Don’t miss the chance to meet the exotic wildlife! Reindeers, Winter foxes, Snow pelt wolfs, Mountain sable cats & Mountain goats, Frost bears, Mysterious Grim spirits Cold Dragon, & maybe you will see a rare an Ice giant or the elusive Snow Beast!” But the world is so big that make her feel like a little hobbit, or was it the local that she stopped by to ask questions about the direction to take?

Let's get back to less chilling yule pictures! Here's a card master Piper sent us with the words: "Happy Yule from the Brothers Goold!" Here, their parents have somehow managed to have them all in a straight line for drawing the yule card.

Left to right: Piper, Theudlind, Warinbert, Childebrand

For our last greeting, we still got one greeting by Valkyrique. Here, she wishes us all a happy new year! Some nannies might be happy to see this scene: a lass taking her annual yule bath!

It's about time we reveal another recipe in our hobbity yule calendar! Miss Myrtellia sent us one. She tells us how yer can make peppermint fudge! Here's what she says about this sweet stuff:

Making this fudge has been one of the Underburrow family's long-standing Yule traditions. I can't remember a single Yule that's passed without making it. One year my parents nearly decided to skip making it, but this was met with outrage by my siblings and me, which would have escalated into a kitchen revolt if my parents hadn't made the swift decision to reconsider! It's certainly my favorite holiday recipe! Rich, creamy, and chocolatey, exactly as fudge should be, with the peppermint flavor bringing that delicious taste of yuletide magic. If you enjoy peppermint flavor, but worry about the sweets being too crunchy, worry not! The candies soften up nicely once they've been added to the top of the fudge. I find the effect delightful!

Chocolate Peppermint Fudge

3 cups (675g) of sugar

3/4 cup (170g) of butter

1 five-ounce can (147g) of evaporated milk

1 1/2 packages (1 package is 13 ounces/370g) of chocolate chips (I find that semisweet or dark chocolate chips work best, but feel free to experiment and use your favorite kind!)

1 1/2 cup (~302g) of marshmallow cream

1 teaspoon (5ml) of vanilla

1 teaspoon (5ml) of mint extract

Crushed peppermint candies (optional)

In a saucepan, bring sugar, butter, and evaporated milk to a boil. Boil for three minutes. Stir in chocolate, marshmallow cream, mint extract, and vanilla. Spread in a foil lined pan (8-9 inches). Top with peppermint candies, allow to cool. Makes 3 pounds of fudge.

For our 18th yule calendar surprise, Agago tells us about her family's yule traditions. Here's a letter she sent for the yule calendar.

Hobbity Yule Log
Agago Longleaf

An old tradition of the Longleaf family wuz what we all called the Hobbity Yule Log. After the harvest feast, my family, Cousin Pozee's family, and our nearest neighbor would make'Gatherin fer Yule' plans.  We wuz given permission ta use a large farm nearby.  We hitched the ponies ta the wagon, put all the kids in the back and went down the road ta the large farm owned by two nice old Hobbit ladies.  There we would all take ta the wilderness in search of natural items fer Yule.  Many things were abundant on that farm.

We would gather boughs of holly and pine.  Pine cones wuz always a favorite too.  The Hobbit skill of rock throwin' came in handy at tryin' to bring down sprigs of mistletoe from the trees.  The mistletoe became a contest amongst us kids.  Who ever wuz able ta get the most mistletoe with the less amount a rocks got a special batch a Mama's honey topped blueberry muffins.  Mama also like what we used ta call lacy vine.  It wuz a very delicate evergreen vine that grew on the ground.  It made nice decorations fer the fireplace mantle and on the front door.

Of course the two most excitin things wuz gettin a Yule tree ta decorate, and gatherin the Yule Log.  It usually took some time ta get just the right Yule tree fer all three families.  Then we would go in search of a Yule log.  It wuz usually nice and round and about three ta four of our Hobbit feets long.  Pappy would saw it straight on each end and load it inta the wagon.  Then off fer home we would go with all us kids in the back of the wagon singin' Yule tunes.

Pappy would plane the bottom of the log so's it would sit still.  Then make two holes in each end fer candles.  Mama would decorate the Hobbit hole and we would help.  Then we would decorate the Yule tree and put a sock on the fireplace mantle fer Santie to gift us.  The Yule log wuz decorated with dried berries and pine cones, holly and pine sprigs.

The Yule log wuz placed in front of the fireplace.  It wuz always warm, and it made the Hobbit hole smell like a pine forest.  Every night fer twelve days we would light the candles on the Yule log.  It wuz believed that it would bring us good luck, good health, much happiness and a fine harvest of crops, pipeweed and ale fer the next year.  As the days grew longer and spring grew near, the Yule log wuz ceremonially burned in the hearth and a piece of it wuz kept ta use ta start the Yule log fire the next year.

Yule means busy times for many, and for the Quickpost hobbits, even more so. Our Ambrinna has been busy making yule deliveries. We hope she'll have a chance to relax on yuletide. Now, she has sent a yule greeting card featuring the Quickpost Office. Doesn't it look busy? Hmm, I bet that all the Quickpost hobbits are just too busy to hang around in the office.

Happy yule greetings from the Quickpost!

Psst. If yer not too busy tonight, yer might like to visit the Green Dragon for a grand foreyule party!

For our 16th yule calendar surprise, we reveal a yule story by miss Passerose! It's similar to a song yer might have heard before, sang by a boy and his favourite toy companion who are also going for an adventure.

Good day everyone!

When I still was a little Hobbit, my GrandPa used to tell me stories. It always was some exciting and funny stories and I really liked them. But my favorites where the ones he told me during Yule, and here’s one I remember.

It deals with two hobbits child that one day decided to leave the Shire to go live in the snowy lands of Forochel, freed of every rules they had to follow before.

I have no idea if it is a true story or not, but anyway, I still find it quite funny.

Take care of yourself, and happy Yule to you all!

Passerose

We’re never coming back!

My friend Sillo has got the sled,

And I have packed a snack.

We're all set for the trip ahead.

We're never coming back!

We're abandoning this life we've led!

So long, Mom and Pop!

We're sick of doing what you've said,

And now it's going to stop!

We're going where it snows all year,

Where life can have real meaning.

A place where we won't have to hear,

"Your room could stand some cleaning."

Forochel is the place for us!

That's where we want to live.

Up there we'll get to yell and cuss,

And act real primitive.

We'll never have to clean plate,

Of veggie glops and good.

Messily we'll masticate

Using any fork we choose!

The Snowbeasts will be our friends.

We'll stay up late and howl,

At the moon, till nighttime ends,

Before going on the prowl.

Oh, what a life!  We cannot wait,

To be in that arctic land,

Where we'll be masters of our fate,

And lead a life that's grand!

No more of parental rules!

We're heading for some snow!

Good riddance to those grown-up fools!

We're leaving!  Yeepee ho!

Today, we have a yule story by miss Diaspore! She's the one who sent us the pulla recipe that was revealed earlier in this year's calendar. Some of you might have heard this in the Green Dragon as well. It's a story about some sort of yule food tragedy.

A Very Broccoli Christmas

Many years ago, a terrible tragedy almost destroyed Yule. It happened like this.

One November, Yule Father was in his toy workshop, loading a cart with finished toys, when he slipped and fell.

He laughed merrily, but his laughter turned to dismay when he realized that he could not get up. When he tried, shooting pains radiated from his back, and his legs simply refused to work.

Naturally, his helpers immediately called the healer, a tall, slender elf, who examined Yule Father closely.

“You’ve injured your back,” the elf solemnly pronounced. “You need complete bed rest for the next two months. And I strongly advise you to lose that belly. It throws you off balance, and that strains your back. Cut out the fats and sugars and eat lots of vegetables!”

Yule Father groaned. “What about all the Yule celebrations? This is the busiest time of the year for me!”

The stern elf frowned at Yule Father. “Others can do the work this one year. If you don’t follow my advice, you might never be able to walk again!”

Yule Father sighed. “Oh, very well. I know that Yule Mother has great wisdom, and she can do the work as well as I can.”

Yule Mother, who’d followed the healer into the workshop, shook her head decisively. “I’ll be much too busy taking care of you,” she said. “Helper Glimma is a capable hobbit. Let her take over.”

Glimma drew herself up to every inch of her two and a half feet. “I can do it,” she promised. “Yule will take place on schedule!”

So Yule Father and Yule Mother retreated to their warm cabin, and Glimma took charge.

“You heard what the healer said,” Glimma told the assembled Yule Helpers, a mixed crew of hobbits, men, women, and dwarves. “Fat and sugar are bad for you.

“Starting today, we’re all going on a strict diet. What’s more, we’ll make sure that the children of the world have only healthy foods to eat. No more Yule candies, cakes, biscuits, or pies. No more hot cocoa, mulled ale, or sweet spiced wine.

“This year,” she continued, “it’s vegetables all the way!”

At her command, the Yule Helpers disposed of all the sweet and rich food and drink. (Merrybelle, a wise and thrifty hobbit, secretly concealed all the discards in her huge hidden cellar.) (Naturally, all her cellars were hidden to guard against hobbit and dwarf raiding parties.)

Glumly, the Helpers began packaging broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, rutabagas, onions, and turnips to send to the children of Middle earth. (Merrybelle kindly added a few mushrooms for each hobbit family.)

The Helpers loved vegetables and ate them in abundance. However, they preferred to accompany their vegetables with meat pies in good flaky crusts, hearty bread, and a mug or three of cider, ale, or beer.

They loved their berry pies, biscuits, cocoa, and many other rich and sweet foods. After all, they reasoned, they worked hard and needed some good stout food to keep them going. Besides, they cherished their plump, well-rounded bodies.

It’s no wonder that Yule Town seethed with sputters, mutters, and murmurs of discontent. Nobody, though, dared to complain to Yule Father or Yule Mother. “They have enough to worry them,” Merrybelle told the other Helpers. “We can’t bother them with this.”

However, it soon became clear that something would have to be done. The hobbits grew pale and greenish on the all-vegetable diet. Men and women grew cranky. The dwarves began to look bony, and—horror of horrors!—their beards were starting to fall out. The elf healer stayed locked in his rooms and spent his time playing the harp and drinking his stash of fine wine.

Fortunately for everyone, Merrybelle had an idea. “We’re Helpers, so lets help Glimma realize for herself that vegetables aren’t enough. She wants vegetables? We’ll give them to her!”

Thus was born the Helpers’ desperate plan. They would drown Glimma in vegetables!

The next day for breakfast, the cook served pan fried turnips with okra onion sauce and a big cup of puréed cauliflower. Second breakfast was a crustless broccoli pie with whipped pumpkin topping. Lunch was spaghetti squash with tomato cabbage sauce and green beans.

For tea, the Helpers ate carrot-patty sandwiches on turnip bread. For dinner, they had sweet potatoes with more broccoli, followed by beet-infused cheese and sweet pepper soda.

At first, Glimma seemed pleased. But when a second all-vegetable day followed the first, and a third the second, and a fourth the third, she grew less and less happy. By the end of the week, she’d had enough.

“All right!” she cried out, clutching her shrinking, fat-starved belly. “The elf’s diet may work for elves, but the rest of us need our treats, and our biscuits, and our sweets.”

Merrybelle grinned, went to her cellar, and brought out the stored food and drink. “We can still send out the packages of vegetables,” she assured Glimma. “But we’ll add the treats that people love.”

Glimma nodded. “I wanted to help Yule Father,” she said. “I guess I went a bit overboard.”

“More than a bit!” muttered a dwarf Helper from somewhere in the crowd. Merrybelle ignored him. “Your heart is large,” she told Glimma.” “You just forgot what Yule Mother so often tells us. ‘Everything in moderation.’”

With that, Merrybelle took Glimma’s hand. “Let’s put on stockings and go slide down the halls,” she said, “and then have a piece of berry pie and a big mug of hot cocoa.” Glimma grinned. “I might just have a bit of brandy to add to the cocoa.”

Laughing, Merrybelle and Glimma tugged on their special sliding stockings and slid happily away.

And now, so shall I.
